Have you just logged into your PC and received the following notification: “You’ve been signed in with a temporary profile”? This message can be a little disconcerting, as you may have noticed that all your shortcuts, documents and files are missing. However, do not fret because with a few simple steps, we can fix your user profile and get everything back.
Please follow the steps below to create a new administrator user:
- Click on the Start button on the bottom-left of your screen
- Type in: control panel
- Press on Control Panel
- Click on User Accounts
- Select Manager another account and click on Add a user account
- Enter a Username and Password and then press Next
- Once the user has been added, select the user and press Change the account type
- Select Administrator then press Change the account type
- Log out of the temporary profile and log in with the newly created user
Use these steps below to repair the corrupt user temporary profile:
- Once logged in with the newly created user, press on the Start button and type in: regedit
- Click and open regedit
- Then navigate to the following location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList - Locate the entry with the extension .bak (this is your working profile)
- Right-click duplicate entry, without the .bak and press Delete
- This would have deleted the corrupt profile
- Right-click on the entry with the .bak extension and click on Rename
- Remove the .bak extension
- Lastly, restart your computer and try to log back into your normal user profile. Everything should be back to how it was.
