Setup the Microsoft Authenticator App with Microsoft 365

We are strongly advising our clients to move over to Multi Form Factor authentication (MFA) to secure their Microsoft 365 services.  Brute force login attacks are on the increase and having a strong password is just not enough these days.

First of all, you need to download the Microsoft Authenticator App to your mobile device and you can find instructions from the following link:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security/mobile-authenticator-app

Once done we need to setup the Authenticator app within Office.

Sign into your account by going to outlook.office.com and logging in with your usual details.

  1. Once logged in, please click your initials in the top right corner, and click on ‘View account’

2. You should now have a menu down the left-hand side of the screen. Click on ‘Security info’. Once here, click on the ‘+ Add method’ button and select Authenticator app.

3. Click next through the options until you see a QR code to scan. We will need this later.

Configuring Microsoft Authenticator Mobile app

  1. Find and open the Microsoft Authenticator application that you installed previously. Click on add an account and then click scan a QR code. You can then hold the camera up to the QR code you receieved on your PC.
  2. Once you have scanned the QR code, click next through all the options on the PC. You should now see the email account appear within the app. On the PC, click next throughout the options and you will now have Microsoft Authenticator appear under methods.

3. Above the Microsoft Authenticator method we have added, click on set default sign-in method and change this to the bottom option to Microsoft Authencicator – notification if you want notifications each time or Microsoft Authenticator app or hardware token – code if you want traditional one time codes, then press confirm.

Authenticator Setup Completed

Microsoft Authenticator is now setup, and your email account is linked to your phone. Shortly, you will be prompted to enter a code. This will happen for all Microsoft apps that you have such as Outlook and MS Teams.

To get this code, open up your Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone and click on the account you added. You will see a 6-digit code, this refreshes and changes every 30 seconds

Once you have entered this code, your device should remember it so that you do not have to enter it everytime you go to log in. However, accessing your accounts from a different device will require you to enter a new code. This helps to stop attackers from gaining access to your account, as not only do they now need the password, but they also need the code from your phone!

Running low on space? Use Disk Clean-up #2

Running low on space? Use Disk Clean-up #2

Did you know that running your computer with a full hard drive can slow down your machine considerably? This is where disk clean-up comes in.

Disk Clean-Up

The disk clean-up utility which comes built-in into the Windows operating system will only delete temporary, cache, and log files created over time by the operating system as well other programs installed onto the computer.

Disk Clean-Up

The good news is that disk clean-up does not delete documents, programs or any other type of file that the computer needs. This makes it a very easy and safe way to free up some space on your hard drive. It is very important that there is always some disk space free as Windows updates sometimes will require more resources to be installed.

To run it, please follow the list below:

  1. In the search box on the taskbar, type disk clean-up. When it comes up, right-click it and select run as administrator.
  2. It will ask you which drive to clean.
  3. It will begin to identify which files need to be removed.
  4. A window will pop asking what you want to be deleted. A lot of the items will be automatically selected for deletion.
  5. Once the items have been selected, press ok. The program will then start to delete all the unnecessary files.

This method should help you to save a little bit of space every so often.

Corrupt Windows Backup Catalog

Corrupt Windows Backup Catalog

A little earlier in the week, we came across an issue with Windows Backup whereby you could not see the Windows Server backup activity. Of course, this did concern us as it looked as though the backups were not running. See below:

corrupt windows server backup

After some digging, it turned out that the backup schedule was still in place and the backups were in fact still running.

Looking a little further into the issue, it transpired that it was the backup catalog that had become corrupt. The catalog is what stores information about your backup, such as the volumes being backed up and where they are located. When this becomes corrupt, you can no longer see information of the last backups that have run in the activity screen.

To fix the corrupt Windows Backup Catalog, please follow these steps below:

*Please note that by following these steps, you will delete the Corrupt Windows Server Backup Catalog. It is recommended that you reconfigure any backups following these steps.*

Fix Corrupt Windows Server Backup Catalog

  • Firstly, click on the Windows button on the bottom left of your screen

  • Then start typing: Command Prompt

  • Right-click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator

  • Copy and paste the following command:
    wbadmin delete catalog [-quiet]

  • Then press Enter / Return on your keyboard

When you next open Windows Server Backup, you will then see all those backups that have in fact been running all along!

One of my favourite places to find new fonts is Google Fonts.

Sometimes you need something a little different but still professional. Simply sort by most popular and find simple but unique styles that won’t offend or overwhelm.
